NinjaTrader 8 Market Replay Basics
Market Replay in NinjaTrader 8 lets you practice trading using real historical tick data. It behaves like a live market—orders fill, price moves tick by tick, and your ATM strategies run normally. This is the safest way to build skill without burning cash or blowing a prop evaluation.
What You Can Do in Market Replay
- Practice entries and exits
- Run ATM strategies
- Test chart setups
- Replay key sessions (CPI, FOMC, open, etc.)
- Experience fast volatility without real risk
It’s the closest thing to live trading without actually trading live.
Step 1: Download Replay Data
From the Control Center:
- Go to Tools → Historical Data
- Click the Load Replay Data tab
- Select your instrument (ES, MNQ, CL, etc.)
- Pick the date(s) you want
- Click Download
You can download days, weeks, or months. Bigger files = longer download, but more practice material.
Step 2: Switch to Playback Connection
Disconnect from any live or SIM feed.
- Go to Connections
- Click Playback Connection
You’ll see a playback control window appear.
Step 3: Load Your Instrument and Chart
Open a chart for the same instrument you downloaded replay data for.
- If you downloaded ES replay → open an ES chart
- If the chart says “No data available,” you picked a date you don’t have data for
Step 4: Using Playback Controls
The playback window includes:

| Speed Slider | Replay 1x → 500x speed |
| Date Selector | Choose specific replay day/time |
| Jump Buttons | Skip forward/backward |
Replay speed is the real power. Want to watch price action at 20x? Click it. Want to slow down a fast reversal? Drop it to 1x.
Step 5: Practice Trading
Now just trade like normal:
- Place orders with Chart Trader
- Use the DOM for scalping practice
- Watch your ATM brackets fire
- Manage positions in real time
Everything behaves exactly as it would live. That’s why this tool is so valuable.
Key Notes About Replay Data
- Replay uses tick-by-tick recorded data
- If your chart isn’t moving, you’re probably outside recorded hours
- You can replay both RTH and ETH
- Replay is local — storing months of it takes space
Performance Tips
- Don’t load dozens of charts at once
- Limit indicator usage
- Replay one instrument per workspace if possible
- SSD drives load replay data faster
